The leather
About this batch
A batch is one run through the tannery: the same hides, drum and finish, in the same week. We buy it, and we cut from it until it is gone.
Every Rumpus piece is commissioned, not stocked. Yours is cut from the batch of top-grain leather on the table when you order.
Every batch is different
Hide is skin. The animals, the water, the drum time and the way the dye takes all vary. Even to the same specification, no two runs come out the same.
You see it in the grain, the colour and the way the surface catches light. You feel it as the leather softens. Two batches will not be twins; they will be siblings. A good one will never come round quite like this again.
This batch
We have never had feedback like this on a batch of leather. Customers who normally say nothing wrote in. They sent photographs from their own lounge rooms.
In their messages, the word that keeps coming up is depth: the colour in changing light, the feel under a hand, the way it settles with use.
We did not engineer it; it simply came out better than any we have had.
Why it is finishing
The last hides from this batch are on the cutting table now. There is no more of this run waiting behind them; when they are cut, that is the end of it.
What comes next
The next batch is ordered from the same tannery, to the same specification. We expect good leather, but we cannot promise the same colour, feel or depth.
